Mariners Receive: RHP Joaquin Benoit
The Padres had just recently exercised Benoit’s $7 million option for the upcoming season, but it seems that they just wanted to get some value to shed his money from the payroll. I’m usually not a fan of spending big money or prospects to get relief pitchers because effective relievers can be found at more reasonable prices, but Benoit has been excellent recently, pitching to a an under 3.00 ERA five out of the past six seasons. Even though his strikeout rate dipped a little this past year, I expect Benoit to be a solid closer for the Mariners next season. The Padres didn’t get much value back in this deal, but their main reason for making this trade was to get some minor league depth, while shedding money from the major league roster for this offseason.
